Give your child every advantage

Help a child whose disadvantaged

We’ve partnered with the amazing charity Read for Good to develop a love of reading in disadvantaged children. Here’s why...

Pile of Books

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reports “reading for pleasure is more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status”.

If all 7-11 year old children read for pleasure daily, 75% of them would reach the level at the end of primary school that predicts 5 or more passes at GCSE.

The impact of reading for pleasure on progress in vocabulary, maths and spelling with 10-16 year olds is 4 times greater than if their parent has a degree.

Literacy is still one of the biggest barriers to social mobility in the UK

At Beyond the Blackboard Tutors we believe that giving your child every advantage can mean helping children who are disadvantaged. And one of the most impactful ways to do this is to tackle one of the biggest blockers to a child’s life opportunities... their ability to read and write.

But many disadvantaged children don't have books at home, can't access a local library and have had their school closed during the pandemic. Leaving them with no opportunity to read at all, let alone develop a love for it. Furthermore school libraries are not a statutory requirement and many that do exist are so underfunded and depleted of stock that they are just not fit for purpose. This means, quite frankly, the children that need reading most are being left behind.

Together we can help develop a love of reading in children who need it!

When children read, it can transform their lives. Children who choose to read regularly improve their mental health and their education outcomes; over time this helps them to fulfil their potential and achieve more in life. The ability to read increases grades, opens up job opportunities and increases aspirations. In short, when we empower children with the tools they need to engage with reading - we can help them to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty. Reading really is that powerful.

The tools children need to become readers are simple. Children need support to develop a love of reading, which schools are wonderfully able to do and have a statutory requirement to fulfil. And children need access to books, comics, magazines, and audiobooks that they would enjoy reading. This second piece of the equation - access to books, comics, magazines, etc. -  is where there is a problem.

That’s why we have partnered with Read for Good who make sure brand new books are distributed to the children and schools who need it most!

For every hour of tutoring you receive through Beyond the Blackboard Tutors, we will make a donation to Read for Good that will enable them to get a brand new book into the hands of a disadvantaged child.
